I just hung up the phone with a dear friend from home who was inspired by Local Townie and decided to start a blog of her own. Cat (Kitty Cat as I call her) just moved from D.C. to South Florida with her fiance and has been going through the same process of trying to find her niche in a foreign land that I am in Lou.
I told her that she would LOVE blogging. It is entertainment. It is cathartic. It is nostalgic. It keeps me grounded. I am always flattered when people tell me that they read what I write because I always thought I was blabbering sweet nothings to the world wide web. But the blog actually keeps me connected in ways that everyday life would not otherwise afford.
Cat's first post in Changing Latitudes made me cry. I've become a sap in my twenty-somethings.
Kevin and I are settling into our new life in tropical South Florida. The change in latitude has been good to us on many levels, but it's been hard to keep up with our family and friends that are spread around the continent: DC, New York, LA, San Francisco, North Carolina, Chicago, Baltimore, Montreal, Birmingham, Niagara Falls, Ottawa, New Hampshire, Vermont, British Columbia... and a very special friend in Kentucky who inspired me to start this blog. Becky and I ran track together in high school and when we, along with our friend Seshie, all went off to different colleges, we kept blogs to keep up with each other. Over time my blog writing trailed off but Becky has an awesome blog that helps me keep up with her no matter where she is in the world or what she's up to. As much as I love our new life in Florida, there are many people I would be very sad to lose touch with and this seemed like the best way to help with that. So, with Becky as my inspiration and New Year's resolutions as my impetus, welcome to my blog and thanks for reading.
Welcome to the blogosphere Kitty. Check out here blog here.

On Southern Hospitality

My mother is a Southern Belle, born in Alabama and raised in North Carolina with very traditional values, which she has since instilled in me. Southern hospitality does not stop with welcoming someone into your home and serving them overcooked vegetables on your fine china (or if you're me then it's second hand Ikea china and mason jars), but it also includes being a gracious guest.
There are a few things that are especially important that I learned from my mother:
-Never show up empty handed. You always need a hostess gift. I still take a gift even when I'm going to my best friend's house to watch Monday night reality television.
-Always volunteer to help with meals, even if you are turned down, at least you offered.
-Be the first to stand up to clear the table.
-Sirs, ma'ams, yes pleases, and no thank yous go a long way.
-Keep your guest space tidy and don't make additional work for your host.
-Strip the bed of dirty sheets when you leave and hang your wet towel appropriately.
-Always send a thank you note.

Gosh I'm glad I'm Southern.

Celebrating Eve
"Think about this moment. This day and this moment, this is the best day of our lives right now." -Eve Carson

This is an excerpt from an email I wrote on March 18, 2008 to one of my best friends as I was remembering Eve:
"Which brings me to this: Life is an adventure. I hope to live with fervor each and every day, to tell the people I care about most that they are special and loved, to make a difference even if it's just to one person. I hope that my impact will leave an impression and that my voice will be heard. Adventure does not entail climbing mountains or escaping to foreign lands, but living courageously and without inhibition to the fears that lay inside you. Adventure is following the whims of your heart and listening when the world tells you where you belong."
Eve makes me proud to be a Carson. Love.

Here's to General Johnson and his Carolina Girls!
This is one of the anthems of my childhood and obviously the theme song of my university years. General Johnson, age 67, has ended an era in Carolina beach music with his passing, but he will be long remembered. One last shag for The General tonight at the last Friday on the Front Porch!
