The year of the YOLO

Another year done.  Accomplished.  It's been quite the year.  Impromptu graduate programs, new friends, old faithfuls, ups, downs, travels, marvels, goals accomplished, failures endured.  C'est la vie.  Carpe diem.  Or the modern twist: YOLO.  You only live once.  On my birthday this year I pacted with V to seize the day because there should be no regrets in these final fabulous years of our twenties.

Forget tigers.  Forget roosters and snakes.  This is the year of the YOLO.

Thankfully, V committed to being the good-bad influence on me.  Sleep in the grave, there will be time enough for it when you're dead.  There may be days when caffeine has to jump start my day or months when the checkbook doesn't quite balance, but no one ever looks back on their years saying, "Man, I really wish I hadn't had such a rich life of experiences."

A similar influence: KGLove...
One of the coolest girls I know. Her wise words will stay with me into the year of YOLO as I reluctantly got excited about how great life is going. When I pumped the breaks on my excitement because disappointment threatened on the horizon, she told me that the thrill was worthwhile, "because everything that comes along is worth getting excited over.  It's the best thing that ever happened to you until it's not... Then you add it to the list of blessings-in-disguise until something comes along that makes you understand why it all happened in the first place."  The Gone Wrong list may be long, but the forever optimist in me knows that it all turns out in the end, otherwise, it's not the end.

Then there's Rob:
We both showed our out-of-state ID's for a couple of local brews and realized that our upbringing in this sweet little college town was the quintessential childhood that most only see in the movies.  And while we both cherish those formative years, our exodus from the town was so that we could know how special our lives were, how much we had been given, and to harness our hunger to do good works.  I grew up with the idea that for those to whom much has been given, much is expected.  We echoed the sentiment tonight in that we feel an obligation to do more with our lives because of these gifts.  But more importantly, the key is not to look at it as obligation, but an opportunity.  It's people like Rob that reassure me, not all who wander are lost... They just ventured off the beaten path to make the world a better place.

A White House Christmas

Each year, the holidays remind us of the many blessings we experience over the course of our lives, from the simple pleasures of laughing and sharing our meals with friends and family to the fulfillment that comes from giving back and serving others.  May we all carry forth the spirit of the season and time time to lift up others in our homes and communities-- not only during this special time, but also throughout the year.

All in the neighborhood

As Labor Day marks the end of summer and the start of fall (perhaps my favorite season), most Americans hit the grill for a neighborhood potluck.  I'm just hanging out in the neighborhood today before I head into work (an unfortunate oxymoron).  My friend Barack had to skip the potluck too because he's headed to my home state for a bigger party... the Democratic Party.

Go 'Merica!

Celebrating Independence Day in our nation's capital was a truly unique experience.  With two hundred year old buildings lining the streets and tourists buzzing in multiple languages, it is easy to understand why DC is the place to celebrate the fourth.

I met up with a couple of friends on the National Mall and beat the heat in the shade of the Washington Monument until dusk.  The fireworks show over the Reflecting Pool was by far THE BEST FIREWORKS SHOW I have EVER seen.  My chest was booming and I kept whispering oohs and aahs as the bombs burst in air.

The only thing that was missing was my picnic on the lawn of the White House.  Barack must have lost my invitation in the mail.

The Dog Days Are Over

Labor Day means the end of summer-- the end of lemonade stands and watermelon seed spitting.  The fireflies will sleep for the winter and the heat lighting will fade into the cool nights.  Swim suits will be traded for scarves and bare toes will hide inside warm socks.

Maybe I say this about every season when the time arrives, but fall is my favorite season.  The brisk chill on my face feels so refreshing in comparison to the blistering heat of summer.  Best of all, it's my birthday season!  Fall means pumpkin spice and running through leaves, wearing warm sweaters and enjoying cool nights under the stars in sleeping bags.  Fall brings people together because while everyone travels and gallivants during the summer, everyone treks home to settle down for fall: homecoming, thanksgiving, my birthday (did I mention my birthday?!).

I missed out on a lot of the fall last year because of my life in Tanzania, but I am thrilled to be settled into a beautiful part of the country where I can watch the colors change and see another season.

They say you have to see all four seasons in a place before it feels like home.  I've just checked summer off the list and I'm waiting patiently for it to feel a little more like home.

Mardi Gras N'Awlins style

I learned a great moto from the Johanson's this weekend:
If you're traveling and don't want to hang like they do in Rome,
You might as well just stay at home.

A weekend in New Orleans in review:
Incredible food eaten at:

-beignets at Cafe du Monde. Now that's a breakfast of champions!

-Po Boys at Johnny's.

-my first hurricane, turtle soup, gumbo, and banana's Foster at The Court of Two Sisters.

-brunch (including my first Bloody Mary and second banana's Foster) at Brenan's. My family's coat of arms is on their giant map of Ireland.

- lunch at Cafe Grenada and a trolly ride back to Canal St.

Lots and lots and lots of beads from:

-The Carolina alumni reunion at the Garden District parade. Richard and I met up with fellow grads Meg, Kemper, Whitney, & Sam to watch the floats. Little did we know that Dook would lose in basketball later that night-- now that's a celebration!

-The St Barkus parade

-Bourbon St. For those of you who have not witnessed the mayhem that is Bourbon St. during Mardi Gras, it's a perfect combination of Franklin St. on Halloween mixed with the NC State fair, minus the rides, add public intoxication, throw in a tranny directing traffic.

United State of Happy New Year!

Happy New Year townies! I'm off to Mac's New Year's Eve Carrburrito party before heading downtown to party like it's... well... 2010. I hope everyone has a safe and celebration and helps ring in 2011 with sequins and glitter!

You obviously know my love of music videos and my secret love of the top 40 (shout out to my fellow love Toewsy!). This is the culmination of 2010's best music in a mashup by DJ Earworm called "Don't Stop the Pop".

New Year's cheers to all those friends in different time zones who aren't celebrating on Eastern Standard Time: Costa Rica, Tanzania, Hawaii, and somewhere in middle America road trip.

Bring it on 2011!

Merry Christmas from Local Townie!

In lieu of a traditional Christmas card (because my life has been anything but traditional this year) and in order to save the planet, I blogged my Christmas card.

This was my Christmas tree in Tanzania. The closest I got to a white Christmas in Africa was seeing the glistening snow on Kilimanjaro. It's good to be home for Christmas.

This is our family picture from Christmas morning. We were obviously in the spirit.
I was lucky enough to get down to Birmingham to celebrate Christmas with Richard and his family. In addition to celebrating the Christmas season, we celebrated finishing my Master's degree at Duke. It was a whirlwind to get everything finished in time, but I'm done and graduated! Definitely deserved a celebration!
Merry Christmas to everyone! I wish you a happy holiday and a wonderful 2011...
it's going to be a big year with babies, new jobs, fun destinations, and lots of friends and family. I can't wait see what it brings. Love.
