The year of the YOLO

Another year done.  Accomplished.  It's been quite the year.  Impromptu graduate programs, new friends, old faithfuls, ups, downs, travels, marvels, goals accomplished, failures endured.  C'est la vie.  Carpe diem.  Or the modern twist: YOLO.  You only live once.  On my birthday this year I pacted with V to seize the day because there should be no regrets in these final fabulous years of our twenties.

Forget tigers.  Forget roosters and snakes.  This is the year of the YOLO.

Thankfully, V committed to being the good-bad influence on me.  Sleep in the grave, there will be time enough for it when you're dead.  There may be days when caffeine has to jump start my day or months when the checkbook doesn't quite balance, but no one ever looks back on their years saying, "Man, I really wish I hadn't had such a rich life of experiences."

A similar influence: KGLove...
One of the coolest girls I know. Her wise words will stay with me into the year of YOLO as I reluctantly got excited about how great life is going. When I pumped the breaks on my excitement because disappointment threatened on the horizon, she told me that the thrill was worthwhile, "because everything that comes along is worth getting excited over.  It's the best thing that ever happened to you until it's not... Then you add it to the list of blessings-in-disguise until something comes along that makes you understand why it all happened in the first place."  The Gone Wrong list may be long, but the forever optimist in me knows that it all turns out in the end, otherwise, it's not the end.

Then there's Rob:
We both showed our out-of-state ID's for a couple of local brews and realized that our upbringing in this sweet little college town was the quintessential childhood that most only see in the movies.  And while we both cherish those formative years, our exodus from the town was so that we could know how special our lives were, how much we had been given, and to harness our hunger to do good works.  I grew up with the idea that for those to whom much has been given, much is expected.  We echoed the sentiment tonight in that we feel an obligation to do more with our lives because of these gifts.  But more importantly, the key is not to look at it as obligation, but an opportunity.  It's people like Rob that reassure me, not all who wander are lost... They just ventured off the beaten path to make the world a better place.

Absentee ballot

Election week is here and it could not be more welcomed in my house.  Time to start filibustering some legislation and stop the TV ads. By popular request, I'm showing you some of the best of my fall since you last saw me...

I celebrated Columbus Day by visiting the Reading Room of the Library of Congress.  The RR is only open to the public 2 days per year.  The other days it is a research library, full of people way more smart and motivated than I am.

A simple afternoon walk can easily turn into a tourist attraction in DC.  When you're surrounded by so much history and architecture, you have to take the time to stop and smile for the camera.

A cool fall day at the Jefferson Memorial.  Lulu discovered ducks in the tidal basin for the first time.  When she saw them again at Meridian Hill Park, she dove straight in after them.

Great Falls is a fantastic destination for a day hike.  About 20-30 minutes from DC and absolutely beautiful scenery.  The parking lot can be a little crowded, especially on a warm, sunny day, but if you push your hike beyond the first couple of overlooks it gets much less busy.  We went on the Virginia side, but the Maryland side has lots of rock scrambling that looks like a lot of fun.  There were climbers setting up top ropes for a few easy climbs, which is definitely something for me to look into.

Work has been great!  It's a busy schedule and I think the grass is always greener on the other side of the pasture.  Some days I love sleeping until noon and having lazy mornings/afternoons while other days I hate that I miss out on the "normal people life" and happy hours/nights out.  I have gotten acclimated to the hospital and am starting to dive into more projects.

Halloween was great fun too, despite the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy.  We faired pretty well in the District despite the grave forecast.

We are heading up on my favorite season... Birthday season!  It's going to be a busy week then I have ten days off for play.  I'm calling it my Birthstaycation.  Stay tuned.

A year in review: Louisville edition

What I'll Miss About Louisville, KY:
-the Frankfort Avenue train
-bourbon culture
-New2Lou and my favorite New2Louies
-horse racing at Keeneland and Churchill Downs
-the parks: Cherokee, Iroquois, Miles
-when it gets dark at 10 pm in the summer because we're so far west
-a great job with wonderful colleagues

What I'll Gladly Leave Behind:
-the worst pollen and seasonal allergies in the country in the Ohio River Valley
-terrifying thunder storms that are also a result of the Ohio River Valley
-never being able to find a recycling bin

Top 10 Louisville Experiences:
10. My many visitors
9. Getting Lulu
8. Train hopping
7. St. Patrick's Day festivities
6. Maker's Mark Distillery
5. Receiving a letter from the Mayor
4. Sunday Fundays
3. The RRG
2. The Moth
1. The Oaks & Derby

Truly Terrible Moments of the Past Year:
1. Leaving my keys in North Carolina.  It's STILL not funny.  The photo featured above is actually about 4 hours before I realized my keys were NC.

Love you Lou.

Derby in Review

In case you didn't know, horse racing is a big deal in Kentucky.

And despite the warnings about the chaos in the Infield, I dressed impeccably.  Nothing but class.

The Oaks almost didn't happen because of a torrential thunderstorm.

But NOTHING could spoil our fun.

Derby at the Downs is the biggest event I have EVER seen.  Two hundred thousand spectators from the world around and I barely even saw a horse the entire day.

New2Lou ladies representing Louisville's finest twenty somethings.

And the men.

Stay around long enough and there's always a door that opens... Sometimes it's the door to the track and you get to stand on it.  Apparently Muhammad Ali was the last one to make it happen... Until ME.

And even if all your horses come in last...

At the Derby, we're all winners!

A Year in Review: Best of 2011

I sat at Meg's house last week recounting what a crazy year it has been.  There were lots of ups and downs, but we went through the year and realized that 2011 was pretty great.

First (and best) baby of the year: my niece Ellis Ann

Best show: Girl Talk (Can't WAIT for 2012 and the most epic show of my entire life)
Best trip: Vail with my soul mate Kelly

Biggest accomplishment: Passing PNP boards
Best theme dressing: WAC 80's night

One of the coolest perks of being a townie: Private cocktail making class on Franklin
Hardest moment: Saying goodbye to Chapel Hill

Best bucket list moment: Popping out of a box.  "I have never been more surprised by anything in my entire life." ~Meg, opener of said box.

Best viral video: Bonjour girl
Best album: Adele's 21 (Got me through some hard times.  But what girl doesn't think that at least one song on that album was personally written for her.)
Best read: 11 Things to Know at 25-ish

Biggest FAIL: Gosh, I can't decide... Leaving my keys in North Carolina when I flew to KY, making a flight to NYC from the wrong departing airport, or wagering against UK fans for the Carolina game...

Bring it 2012, I'm ready.

A Year in Review: 25

25 has been an amazing year.  Sometimes when I think back about my years I am astonished at all I have accomplished in this short quarter century life. I did so much at 25 that some people don't accomplish in a lifetime.  It has inspired me and made me hungry for adventure, passion, and joy in my life.  Enjoy this pictorial review of my 25th year.

Turned 25 in Tanzania-- a day of waterfall hopping through small villages around Marangu, TZ.

Living in Moshi, Tanzania.

Returned home to spend the next 3 months travelling, looking for jobs, and visiting friends all over the country.  I also welcomed this sweet little nugget into the world.

Soaked up post-grad life and made the most of my time in Chapel Hill.

Graduated from Duke University

Quit my job in the PCICU at Duke when I found my DREAM job at U of L in the Peds ED.

Loved on my wonderful friends and had some cherished memories with the townies.

Moved to Louisville, KY

I couldn't pass up one last epic weekend in Chapel Thrill with the celebration of the 3rd annual Greatest Kickball Tournament Ever!

Building my life in Louisville has meant lots of hard work and persevering.  Luckily I landed some pretty awesome friends.  My climbing friends in particular are wonderful.  This is only the start of the adventures we'll have together.

I rescued the sweetest little puppy dog, Lulu.  Named her after my new town, and proceeded to whip her into shape with obedience as she whipped me into shape dragging me down the street on our runs.  She makes Louisville feel more like home.

Digging in with old friends and new in Kentucky.

Not knowing what happens in the future is always one of the most exciting, inspirational, and endlessly frustrating aspects of life and I am so very excited about what the future holds for me.  It could be anything and I am open to the opportunity.

Orientation in review

Today was my first day off orientation.  I signed my own prescriptions, billed under my name, and didn't have to discuss my patients with anyone else.  Three months ago, I would have never believed this day would come. Now don't get me wrong, I'm still wet behind the ears, appropriately scared and very quick to ask questions, but I have a new found independence that is very exciting.

So this means I've been in Louisville for 3 months now... I've been a busy girl:

- Several good friends that I spend my free time with
-Co-workers that I enjoy working and socializing with
-A dog and dog friends
-Climbing buddies and a gym
-Made 3 quilts this summer
-Housed 8 guests (and 1 doggie guest)

But there's still a very long way to go.  Louisville and I are not BFF's yet and I'm waiting on a few things:

-Professional development (NAPNAP meeting tomorrow night)
-Find a church that I jive with.  Whodda thunk that Louisville was more conservative than Chapel Hill... uh, duh.
-Find a posse.  Next to my family, that's what I miss most about Chapel Hill.  I'm still looking for "my people"
-Make a calendar.  Know something to do every night of the week
-Take more pictures
-Invest in my community.  Although I'm not really sure what medium I will find to do this, I need to give back to the place that has given to me.

I'm a very goal oriented person.  And I've been doing short term goals since I was a freshman in college.  I always look back with 20/20 hindsight and laugh at how things worked out perfectly.  Gosh, I hope that happens now.  I love to plan, but I am always willing to adapt my plan when a new opportunity presents itself.  I think that making goals and writing them down helps to keep them in the forefront of your mind, while also making you accountable for making them happen.  Now ya'll are going to help keep me accountable.

Kentucky State Fair

Whitney and I hit up the Kentucky State Fair last weekend. While most go for the rides, games, and livestock, we were going for a different kind of entertainment... people watching.

The Kentucky State Fair in review:
Traffic time to park: 45 minutes
Walk to the stadium from parking spot: 0.75 miles
Adult admission: $8
Calories in my deep fried Derby pie: 5,000
Satisfaction of my deep fried Derby pie on a scale of 1 to 10: 9.3 (subtracted points for not enough powdered sugar dumped on top)
Percentage of games where the carny folk sucker the locals into dumping their cash on useless games of chance: 100
Ratio of real freaks to cheesy illusions in the sideshow: 8 to 1 (the tiny woman is REALLY small)
Number of Boys II Men on stage: 3 (they were missing a member)
The last year that the rides were inspected for safety: 1992

Likelihood that I will return to the state fair next year: 0. (North Carolina's is WAY better)

A weekend in review

Back to Climbing Edition: Pilot Mountain
Months I have taken off climbing: 7
Weeks of coaxing it took to get me to get back on the rock: 4
Co-workers I turned into climbing partners: 1
Minute drive to Pilot Mountain: 90
Falls I had on my first route back on rock: 0! Flashed it (on TR)!
Range I surprised myself by climbing: 5.8-5.10
Percentage that I felt like a champ: 72 (definitely room for improvement)
Number of trees that held my post-climb hammock relaxation: 2

It feels so good to have gotten over that initial skittishness of regaining my strength, and I felt amazing. It was a beautiful day and there are sure to be many to follow this season.

On rock? Rock on.
